Kelsey Grammer’s daughter Spencer Grammer on working with dad: ‘It was fun to make him laugh’
When Kelsey Grammer first met her dad, he was already in a long-term relationship with his ex-wife and then girlfriend. So, the actor was more interested in his ex-wife and her two children.
In an exclusive interview with INSIDER, Kelsey, 27, opened up about her relationship with her dad.
She explained that when she first met Kelsey’s mother, she was only 11.
“I remember my mom told me to say hi to him as my dad was trying to make their relationship work,” Kelsey told INSIDER in a phone interview. “It was funny, but at the same time I felt very vulnerable knowing that all the time.”
Kelsey said when she was a young teen, she “loved to see Kelsey’s mother as Kelsey’s mom.”
Kelsey continued, “I could see her as this strong woman who was very independent, who grew up in a lot of different environments, but she always had a real respect for herself.”
“I’m not saying that that’s what they’re all like, but she was someone who did what was best for [herself],” Kelsey added, noting her mother was always in control.
Kelsey said of her dad, he was “hardly aware” of his daughter growing up, and “was very self-absorbed.”
“I remember him thinking that he was the hero, and I had to grow up without him there,” she said.
After one of Kelsey’s first acting gigs, she met her dad, who was already a successful actor.
“I didn’t know he was famous or anything, but I remember him being very warm,” Kelsey said. “He said hello to me and then he went and took off.”
On the show’s first season he was on, “I was in it, so I was like, ‘Oh, he’s going to like me.’”
