When you take a drive down the coast in search of the perfect beach to cool off in the summer, there’s a good chance you’ll pass a man with a long beard, a t-shirt to his knees, working on his surfboard in his backyard.
Some say long beach bums, “a guy with a beard who surfs all day and lives in his van.” Others say he’s from Vermont, and while I’m no expert on the town and its residents, he can’t be far wrong.
Long beach bums in L.A. is a funny sight. It’s the reason I decided to put together a list of the best long beach bums of all time, from a guy from Vermont to a surf dude from California. It’s almost like I’m taking the beach bum genre in LA for the first time. Or taking the beach bum genre in LA for the first time, anyway.
Brett, a Vermont native who now lives in North Carolina, surfs with the occasional wave for his job, but he’s also had the freedom to surf whenever he wanted, and he said he loves it.
“I just really like surfing,” he told me when we spoke over the phone. “You get to be out in the water and not really be in control of what you’re doing. It’s peaceful and everything.”
