The Little Maja — The Little Maja

Film scores cover a spectrum of sounds and musical colors. Here are a few of note.

The Largo is a series of songs, set to the same music, written by Frank Wedekind in 1891. They were set to the music of a flute and orchestra by Carl Stalling-Björkman and first performed in 1913, with the flute by the pianist and composer Paul Sacher.

This is a very interesting and enjoyable film, with a fine score and lots of interesting characters. There are a couple of “cute” girls at the bar, among them a woman who would grow into a very fine actress in the screen (she had a bit part in the 1936 film, The Golden Bowl), and a florist, who would later come to be a writer and director.

There are a couple of interesting themes in this film: The first one, The Dance of Death, tells the story of two girls from different worlds who have a terrible car crash. The second theme is The Largo, a theme which is found in many films and was probably used in many films before, but not many people know about it.

All this was just in time for his next film and the first major success in his career. This one is the first in the series “The Little Maja”.

It tells the story of an opera singer (played by the legendary Léonide Massine). She was young and a bit of a flirt, and would one day become his first wife. She loved his music but could sing it better.
